The Quarrying Process
Because Onondaga limestone is a dense stone, meaning that its grains are fine and closely packed, it is quite hard to break apart. In its natural state, most Onondaga limestone comes out of the ground in relatively small pieces no more than six or eight feet in any direction. Because it is a dense stone, Onondaga is also quarried using relatively small tools. Onondaga limestone is most often quarried in open pits as it is located closer to the surface than some other stone types.
