Prehistoric Life ~ 350-300 million years ago
With this warm water came an abundance of life.

During the Devonian and Mississippian period, much of the land you are standing on right now was covered in water. At this time, New York State was also located quite close to the equator and experienced a subtropical climate. With this warm water came an abundance of plant and animal life. The prehistoric creatures that once roamed here are the ancestors of many animals you might find dwelling in modern day tidepools.

Under a microscope, the Salem limestone will appear to have small fossil fragments. This is because the high calcium content of the Salem limestone is due in large part to the fact that it is made of microfossils. Microfossils are small parts of larger fossilized organisms, most of whom sported calcium based shells or exoskeletons.
